When to Splurge and When to Save

Building a brand new home is a huge investment and you’re probably looking for small ways to shave some money off of the grand total. We want to make sure you’re getting everything you’ve ever wanted out of your brand new home, but still love saving you money wherever it’s possible! There are some areas that budgeting extra will make a world of difference, and some that you won’t even notice! Here is our list of places to splurge and places to save!

Splurge: Windows and doors

Choosing a high quality window or door will ultimately save you money in the long run. Without a proper seal, outside air can leak in and drive up your electricity and gas bills.

Save: Tile and Flooring

Saving money doesn’t mean sacrificing style. There are plenty of affordable tile and flooring options that are still durable and look amazing! Natural stone and hardwood may be the design you’re looking for, but that look is still achievable without spending a fortune.

Splurge: Cabinets

Using higher quality cabinets will ensure you can enjoy them for many years to come! You may choose to remodel your kitchen in the future, but if you have high quality cabinets you won’t have to replace them any time you want to change up your style!

Save: Faucets and hardware

Door knobs, drawer pulls, lighting fixtures, faucets, and similar features are great areas to save. That doesn’t mean get the cheapest options out there, you still want them to be durable and look nice, but you don’t have to break the bank to get the best either.

Splurge: The room you will spend the most time in

For some that may be the kitchen and others it may be a bathroom or bedroom. If you’re someone who loves to cook but only uses their bedroom for sleeping, invest in a high end kitchen. If you use your master bed/bathroom as a getaway, add more luxurious features like a heated floor and spacious soaking tub.

Save: Solid foundation vs basement

If you don’t feel like a basement is necessary for your family, opt for a solid foundation instead. This will not only help cut down on building cost but also save you money on energy bills later!

Splurge: Contractor/Labor

The last place you want to skimp on is your labor. Do your research and make sure to choose a contractor that will pay attention to every detail and not cut corners putting you and your family at risk.
